oil on canvas   2018   6 x 4'             I#147

I think that is was late Summer 2017, when I was asked by Erin Stephenson, probably the main spirit behind the Atticus Hotel project in McMinnville Oregon, to create a piece representative of McMinnville, something that would resonate with the community and the visitors, a piece that was going to go behind the reception bar at this new boutique hotel that she and her partners were going to build.

I was very honored to have her thinking of me for this piece, since it has a placement of honor in what has turn to be one of the most gorgeous constructions here in the Willamette Valley.

Erin mentioned some of the places and aspects of our beloved town that she considered to be an important part of the historical and contemporary life of McMinnville, and of course, I added some more as well as a few references to the hotel.

Originally we had spoken about a 3 x 5 feet size, but after starting to set up the model and adding and adding more elements and looking at the size of the wall with the help of Christina Tello, the interior designer responsible for the wonderful environment at the hotel, we decided to go to a 4 x 6 feet dimension.

They also shared with me some of the decorative details, colors and textures that they were planning to use in the decorative scheme, like the velvet for some of the pillows and the curtain fabric that I included in the painting.

I started the painting in the middle of November 2017 after I collected most of the elements and when the model was ready to my satisfaction, working on the canvas several days per week, and was finished mid March 2018.

When I'm asked what kind of painting this one is, the description that comes closer to my intention is: A still life portrait of McMinnville.
